Late January represents a peculiar point in the season, with the last of the warm weather training camps coinciding with the opening races of the new campaign.

Katusha is one of professional cycling’s heavyweights: the indulgence of Russian billionaire Igor Makarov and home to former world number one Joaquim Rodriguez and Milano-Sanremo winner Alexander Kristoff. Both men are in Calpe to make final preparations for the coming campaign.

For the biggest squads, racing commitments are already underway in Australia and Argentina, while for UCI Continental teams, like the AN Post-Chain Reaction Cycles squad with whom Rouleur is spending time on the Costa Blanca, a few short weeks remain until the first competitive engagement of the new year.

Items of interest on display in the hotel car park included an entire fleet of Canyon’s Aeroad CF SLX road bike (of the German brand’s climbing bike, the Ultimate CF, there was no sign), and the Speedmax CF time trial steeds of Rodriguez and Marco Haller, both of which were subject to fine adjustment before the group left for a day in the saddle.
