A clear winner for today’s Top Banana. It’s Dan McLay, all the way.
We’ve been fans of the Leicestershire sprinter for some time now, and his three top-ten placings already in this Tour hinted there was better to come. Today, he weaved his way through the bodies and emerged from the seething mass to finish just behind two of the sprinting greats – Mark Cavendish and Marcel Kittel.
His Fortuneo-Vital Concept directeur claimed afterwards that it was no surprise “when you know how talented he is. He was the fastest rider in the finish there”. Which may be pushing it a tad, but check out McLay’s amazing finish at the Grand Prix Denain earlier this year, where he weaved through a dozen bodies and took the win comfortably, and the DS might have a point. A stage win before we hit Paris is not out of the question.
The guy’s certainly got the legs. Now he’s got a banana too.
