It was a yellow day all round for Chris Froome on Mont Ventoux: he has the jersey, the Mavic neutral service bike and now our Top Banana prize.
However, it was far from mellow. The shortened stage, with enthusiastic crowds crammed onto the Giant of Provence, culminated in Froome, Richie Porte and Bauke Mollema crashing into the back of a motorbike. It was a savage and unwanted end to an excellent day of racing, albeit another legend added to a mountain which has already given the Tour so many.
Froome was left with a busted bike. Ever the competitor, the Briton started jogging up the mountain until a fresh steed could be found. We must compliment Team Sky’s leader on his running form, much easier on the eye than his cycling style.
It seems race officials are letting Froome keep the yellow jersey after that chaos. Best of luck with the rest of the Tour. And if he quits the day job, there’s always fell running to fall back on.
