Tour de France 2015: Top Banana, stage 17

Andrew Talansky bags our banana today. Affectionately nicknamed “Pit Bull” [are you sure? – Ed], the American used all the tenacity at his disposal attempting to peg back the lead of Simon Geschke on the final climb to Pra-Loup, but couldn’t quite get there – which is no bad thing in many ways.
Geschke’s dogged persistence in breaks over the past few days was justly rewarded with the stage win, Giant-Alpecin’s first of this year’s Tour. How they have missed the sprinting prowess of the out-of-form Marcel Kittel, left out of the nine-man squad for the classic booby prize of riding the Tour of Poland instead…
But the unsung 29-year-old German Geschke throughly deserved to take what is far and away the biggest result of his eight-year professional career.
As for Talansky, it’s the booby prize of a banana for him at the moment, but we suspect the Cannondale-Garmin leader is not finished yet. Today’s performance saw him climb from 17th to 12th on GC. And he’s looking stronger by the day.
Keep ‘em peeled – your eyes, that is, not your bananas.
