Firstly, it’s because I’m a Catholic.
Also, I have good memories because I won two races that went over the Ghisallo when I was a junior and I’ve done it a few times in training and the Tour of Lombardy. It’s special to finish on a mountain where there’s a sanctuary.
It’s an incredible place. When I was 22, I was invited to go there as a guest and attended mass. The Madonna del Ghisallo holds lots of important relics and jersies; I remember one particular maglia rosa because it was from so many years ago.
In a sense, the joy felt when you reach the top of the climb could be a connection, like the altar with the symbol of the Madonna.
Perhaps the photo is a true symbol of the union between sport and religion, there are elements in the two that meet. For an Italian, the maglia rosa is the greatest sporting symbol.
