“I positioned myself just beyond the finish line, expecting that after a time trial riders would be coming in twisted, empty and hypnotised by the enormous effort.” Paolo Ciaberta shoots Taylor Phinney for Rouleur issue 49.

I shot this image during the individual time trial in Florence during the 2013 World Championships.

I positioned myself just beyond the finish line, expecting that after a time trial riders would be coming in twisted, empty and hypnotised by the enormous effort, which I wanted to convey in the image.

Shots like this come down to experience, not luck. You have to know where to stay and when to be there; luck could help you for one shot but for anything more than that, it isn’t enough.

Just after the finish line, Phinney was sitting on the ground and he remained there for several minutes in a state of trance, recovering his energy and thinking about the race.

He didn’t notice me of course and it was all over very quickly, before long I was on the hunt for other riders in the same situation.
