Three times winner of the Ronde Van Vlaanderen, three times winner of Paris-Roubaix, world champion and twice World Cup champion; Johan Museeuw is our guide to the two finest races of the year… probably.

The Flemish cycling superstar nicknamed the ‘Lion of Flanders’ (De Leeuw Van Vlaanderen) tells Ian Parkinson what makes a Flandrian cyclist and why cycling is written into the Flemish people’s DNA.

Now 50, he also discusses his cycling academy, tips for riding the cobbles and his opinion on modern cycling’s current crop of Classics riders.

“We have that beautiful picture of Tom Boonen on the Koppenberg. It’s a more difficult hill than the Muur Van Geraardsbergen and he’s riding in the middle. Thats the way to ride it.

“I know the Koppenberg and he has a good position. If you’re at the front you can do what you want. But it’s really not so easy to do that.”
