Stage 1 Rotterdam – Brussels
Who said Miguel Indurain never attacks? The big Spaniard took everyone bar Johan Bruyneel by surprise in 1995, attacking in the company of the Belgian over the same roads covered in today’s stage some 22km from the finish in Liege to put 50 seconds into the peloton. The following day’s time trial to Seraing duly won, Indurain donned the yellow jersey and wore it all the way to Paris for a record fifth consecutive victory, all without crossing the line first in a single road stage.
