Stage 12 Bourg-de-Peage – Mende
The French love a home winner, naturally, but a Frenchman who crosses the line first on Bastille Day is destined to go down in Gallic history, especially one as loved as Laurent Jalabert. The sprinter-turned-King of the Mountains winner achieved the feat twice: 2001 in Colmar and 1995 in today’s finish town of Mende.

Should anyone doubt what the ONCE rider’s win means to the locals, the climb of Le Croix Neuve was swiftly renamed Montee Laurent Jalabert in celebration of his epic 200km break.
