1 Classic: Eddy Merckx

Posted on

Cycling’s greatest rider will be appearing at the 1 Classic in London between November 19-21.
“I’m looking forward to coming to the 1 Classic,” Merckx said, speaking at the Eddy Merckx Classic in Fuschl am See.
Merckx can accurately be described as a legend in an era in which the word has been devalued. His attendance at the 1 Classic is a coup.
The Cannibal’s bike brand, Eddy Merckx Cycles, will be among those exhibiting at the intimatley curated show, which will be held at Vinopolis, near London Bridge.
Merckx has a friendly history with British cycling; he was the only continental rider to attend Tom Simpson’s funeral in 1967 and has described Mark Cavendish as the greatest sprinter of his era.
The cycling great was also full of praise for Bradley Wiggins, who himself admires Merckx.
“I’m a fan of him too. He’s really a super-champion, I have a lot of admiration for him, the Hour Record and everything he’s done,” Merckx said.
Does he think Wiggins’ Hour mark record of 54.526km will be beaten? “I don’t think so. Not any time soon.”
Reflecting on own his standard-raising ride in 1974 at Mexico City, Merckx said: “The Hour record was joy, but a lot of pain. It was probably the worst pain of my career. I had to use different pedals, specially-spoked wheels and drop handlebars.”
“It was tough. Especially on with the pressure of the tyres and the centrifugal force in the corners and all that on the track. I paid dearly for that Hour Record.”
“It’s different to nowadays, you can’t compare them. There was the wind and the open track for me,” he said. “But it’s always tough. Wiggins suffered too.”
1 Classic offers a unique insight into the peloton; previews of 2016 bikes, accessories and apparel from the most iconic brands within the sport, special guests ‘in conversation’, World Tour and historic bike collections, and much more. It’s an opportunity for attendees to immerse themselves in the brands and athletes at the pinnacle of cycling, up close and personal, within the relaxed yet prestigious environment of Vinopolis’ private event spaces.
