Canyon launched the Aeroad CF SLX last year in Leeds, just days ahead of the Grand Départ of the Tour de France. The sculpted chassis is the work of Canyon Bikes’ designers, Wolfgang Kohl and Michael Adomeit, with input from Tomas Fiegel of Darmstadt industrial design agency, Artefakt. A medium size frame weighs a claimed 960g, but aerodynamic efficiency is its calling card. Adomeit insists that Canyon's goal was to make a fast bike, rather than a light, stiff, or aerodynamic bike. After considering all drag sources, from bearing friction upwards, improved aerodynamics was found to yield the greatest advantage. "At 14kph, aero becomes biggest source of drag," Admoeit says. "At 40kph, it is 80 per cent of drag."
